1. STP
- Ables are known are Sheilded Twisted Pair cables.
- Cabling includes metal shielding over each individual pair of copper wires.
- This type of shielding protects cable from external EMI (electromagnetic interferences). e.g. the 150 ohm shielded twisted pair cables defined by the IBM Cabling System specifications and used with token ring networks. STP cables are CAT 5, CAT 5E and CAT 6.
2. UTP
- Inexpensive.
- Offers a high bandwidth.
- Easy to install.
- Used to connect workstations, hosts and network devices.
3. Coaxial Cable
- Usually constructed of either copper or aluminum.
- Used by cable television companies to provide service.
- Used for connecting the various components which make up satellite communication systems.
4. Fiber Optic
- Made of glass or plastic.
- Very high bandwidth.
- Enables to carry very large amounts of data.
- Used in backbone networks, large enterprise environments and large data centers.
- Used extensively by telephone companies.
